Assessing Israel’s Strategic Options:
What Sherlock Holmes Would Say
Lecture by
Dr. Martin Sherman

Monday, February 22, 2010 • 7:00 p.m.
Luxe Hotel Sunset
11461 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles

Dr. Martin Sherman acted as a ministerial advisor in the 1991-2 Shamir government. He also served for seven years in various defense related capacities and now teaches political science at Tel Aviv University. His works have been published in academic journals such as Journal of Strategic Studies, Journal of Theoretical Politics, International Journal of Intelligence and Counter Intelligence and Nations and Nationalism. He is the author of two books on international conflicts.

Dr. Sherman is also a member of the advisory board of the Nativ journal in which he is published frequently.

…. when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth"
Sherlock Holmes in the Sign of Four

This citation from one of the better known episodes in the exploits of the mythological sleuth from 221B Baker Street comprises the analytical point of departure for the lecture.

After a detailed examination of Israel's geo-strategic parameters, its geo-political environment and the  indispensible imperatives that arise from these parameters, the analysis proceeds to an assessment of the policy proposals on the table today for the resolution of the Middle East conflict. It will show how the current policy endeavors based on Israeli territorial concessions and the "land-for-peace/two-state" paradigm" are impossible to reconcile with the long-term survival of Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people. A comprehensive "out of the box" alternative of addressing the major challenges facing Israel is set out accompanied by an appraisal of the conditions required for its implementation an evaluation of its feasibility and estimation of economic costs it would entail.

ENDORSEMENT
  RICK RICHMAN – NOVEMBER 30, 2009

Good evening.  My name is Rick Richman; I edit a blog called Jewish Current Issues and blog at Commentary Magazine’s group blog, Contentions.  It is my honor to introduce Doris Wise Montrose this evening and to thank her and her colleagues at Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors for their extraordinary efforts in arranging this event.

Doris has almost has single-handedly turned Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors into the forum in Los Angeles where some of the most important American, Israeli and other international speakers come to meet the community, and tonight is no exception.  During just the last few months, CJHS has hosted Norman Podhoretz to speak on his book “Why Are Jews Liberals?” -- the same week it was published -- former Israeli UN Ambassador Dore Gold to speak on his new book “The Rise of Nuclear Iran,” and Frank Gaffney of the Center for Security Policy in Washington, D.C. to provide a “Missile Crisis Briefing.” It is no exaggeration to say that no other organization in this city has provided a comparable forum for the discussion of issues of such extraordinary public importance.

Before turning this over to Doris, let me mention that CJHS is a tax-exempt, non-partisan, 501(c)(3) organization, also known as the Alliance for Israel and World Jewry.  It is a completely volunteer-run organization, so that 100% of every contribution goes directly to its events.  It depends completely on the efforts of its volunteers and your contributions to continue to do this.  The admission charges cover only a fraction of the costs.  Perhaps before you leave this evening, you might take the envelope out of the brochure you received when you came in, and help CJHS provide more evenings like this one by making a tax-deductible contribution.

At this point, let me turn over the podium, with thanks and appreciation, to Doris Wise Montrose.
