The recent resolution of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA), which attacks leading American Christians for supporting Israel and endorses an Arab “right of return” into the Jewish State, will harm prospects for peace in the region. Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors Los Angeles (CJHSLA) condemns this resolution in the strongest terms and is appalled by reports that some Jewish groups have welcomed it as a relatively “balanced” document.
Calls for economic warfare against Israel, coupled with sensational fabrications reminiscent of ancient anti-Semitic libels, have become routine in the PC(USA) General Assembly. This year’s anti-Israel hostility reached a fever pitch with a resolution demanding the division of Jerusalem and endorsing the “Amman call” for the demographic destruction of Israel by millions of Palestinian “refugees.”
The dispute over refugees stretches back to the 1948 war, when Israel was invaded by Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq. Regional hostility forced some 600,000 Jews living in Arab and Muslim countries to flee to Israel. They were accorded rights, provided assistance, and allowed to build new lives. The same war displaced approximately 600,000 Arabs from Israeli territory to many of the 22 Arab or Muslim states. They were denied basic rights by Arab and Muslim leaders and confined to UN-maintained refugee camps.
Four generations later their descendents number over four million, are still absurdly labeled “refugees,” and continue to live in squalid camps. The UN-maintained camps are often directly controlled by Arab countries and have become cesspools of international terrorism and anti-Semitic incitement. That the PC(USA) demonizes Israel for this international debacle is deeply troubling. That they demand Israel open its borders to millions of its self-proclaimed enemies is beneath reproach. The PC(USA) has ignored the moral imperatives and Biblical promises for a Jewish homeland and instead opted for the de-facto destruction of Israel.
CJHSLA also denounces the General Assembly’s ongoing attacks on Israel’s steadfast friends in the Protestant community. The PC(USA)’s continuing smears against Pastor John Hagee are transparent attempts to make their own anti-Israel hostility seem mainstream and reasonable. In sharp contrast to the feigned neutrality and political hypocrisy of the PC(USA), Christian Zionists such as Pastor Hagee insist that anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism represent profound misreadings of Christian Scripture. CJHSLA cannot but question the wisdom of Jewish leaders who approach Christian Zionism with suspicion while purporting to find balance in the hostility of mainline Protestant groups like the PC(USA).
